It wasn't always this way, the original ottoman was nothing more than a simple bench piled high with cushions, an inexpensive yet robust alternative to the Sofa. Yet from humble beginnings, ottomans were reworked by French furniture designers and codified into a series of practical, versatile home accessories which double as storage, seating or side tables. Inherently versatile and immaculately styled, the original ottomans made waves in the world of interiors and were immediately adopted by the fashion-conscious public at the time.

Best of all, ottomans may also provide extra storage space with built-in cabinets. Ultimately, ottomans are home accessories, so you should take care when selecting a new piece to contemplate the existing design principles which guide your room design. Depending on whether you prefer a classic or contemporary look, a variety of fabric options, colours and styles are available which should prove well suited to your space. However, if you can't find want you are looking for when browsing the high street, you may wish to consult with an interior designer who will be well placed to advise with an objective eye on what will look best in your room.
There are many different shapes and sizes of ottomans on the market these days. Usually covered with fabric and often sold as a piece of a sofa set, the ottoman is often used as a footstool or as a surface for placing books or other objects on. They definitely add to the decor of a room and are very handy when it comes to resting your feet after a long and tiring day, however they can also be extremely practical pieces of furniture as well, when it comes to providing extra storage. Ottoman trays are sometimes set on top of the ottoman, providing a more secure and stable surface for placing cups and glasses.
