Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Google and other search engines have a number of ways they index web sites, and their algorithms do differ slightly. In this day and age the algorithms they use have become extremely complex. Google wants to index a website in the correct place as it’s what they do. Just as a library needs an index so you can find a book in the right place (and nobody wants to find a book in the sailing section that’s about rocket science.)
One thing to bear in mind is you can’t cheat Google, they will find you out and shut you down! This gets me to the point.
- One way is to have had your site online for years, and there is nothing you can do about that except wait.
- Use ‘metatags’, which are written into the coding of your website. They are almost a thing of the past but can still help. Google doesn’t like them as they are hidden and you could use any key word you like and the viewer never sees them.
- Google will look through the visible text and find all references to e.g.. Sailing and index’s you that way. If your site is all about Sailing and you write that word enough in your text, Google will believe you.
- But what Google really likes is BACK LINKS. You must get as many links as you can from other sites to link to your site, AND YOU MUSTN’T LINK BACK TO THEM. If many links refer to you but YOU don’t link back, this tells Google that your site must be of some importance. The more important the site is that links to you, the higher your ranking on Google will be in return. For example if you had a link to you from the Wall St Journal, Google would think you are a very important
There are a bunch of ways you can be linked to, such as news groups, blogs and forums. You have to be careful though that your account with them doesn’t get shut down because you look like you are plugging e.g. putting your link on every post. Another way is to write a small article about your business and submit it to say a metropolitan newspaper and hope it gets published, and mention your web site. You should also get on to as many free or paid business directories as you can, like the yellowpages.com.au.
Last but not least you can also use Google sponsored links - your link will turn up all over the place on sites that use Google Ads. If you have a look at my site, it’s on the left, every time someone clicks the random link I get 50 Cents but it works the other way also. I have sponsored links so that my site ad appears all over the place and when someone clicks on it I pay 50 Cents. You can up the anti and say you will pay more per click and your site will be displayed more often. so that way you get what you pay for.
Cheers,
Mike.
