Ottomans often come included as part of a furniture set and in such cases are intended to be used as a footrest. They will be made to match the other furniture and will sit well in the corner of the room or at the foot of your sofa or armchair. This is a great way to enhance the comfort and luxury of your living room and ensures a relaxing seating experience when unwinding with a book or to watch your favourite show. Most designer furniture suites will include an ottoman for this purpose.
Obviously an Ottoman should not be used as a coffee table without utilizing a serving tray on top as soft material and hot liquid drinks do not make a good combination. The answer is simple. Use a serving tray when you have guests and need a place to serve refreshments. Obviously be careful if you do have young children as the hot drinks will be at their height level. The more common uses of an ottoman are as a footstool or if large enough, a day bed but sometimes they will double up as a seat. If you have more guests than chairs, I am sure younger people won't mind using it as something to sit on. It won't be comfortable for long periods of time as it doesn't have the back support but it will do in an emergency.
A black ottoman won't just add style and glamour to your room but it can also help with storage issues. Some models open up to reveal a handy storage unit for magazines, games or even bedding. It helps keep your front room tidy but yet things are at hand if you need them. It is definitely worth looking at this option when making your purchase.
Ottomans can also provide much needed additional seating for your children. Because they are smaller than a standard armchair or sofa they can fit perfectly in a child's room and most children will love sitting on them. You can brighten up the colours of your ottoman by purchasing separate loose covers or simply request them to be upholstered in specific child-friendly colours and materials to match their bedrooms. It's worth also choosing a material that is easy to wash if you are buying an ottoman for your child!
